Greek Independence Day started in 1821 with the War of Greek Independence against the Ottoman Empire. On March 25th, 1821, Bishop Germanos of Patras raised the flag of revolution over the Monastery of Agia Lavra in the Peloponnese. In 1829 the revolution ended with the signing of the Treaty of Edirne, which established an independent Greek state.

Greek towns and villages hold school flag parades where school children march and carry Greek flags and dress in traditional Greek costumes.
