The History of the Gyro

A: It is believed that the gyro originated from Greece.

A: George "Papa George" Apostolou is known as the "father of today's gyros." - According to Devanco Foods

Q: When was the gyro invented?

A: According to Plated, in the 18th or 19th century, doner kebab, meaning "rotating grilled meat", was invented in Turkey. Later it was introduced to Greece and the locals named if "gyros." Gyro is known as the Greek word for turn.

Q: What are gyros made of, specifically the meat?

A: According to Serious Eats, traditional Greek gryos are typically made with "whole pieces of thinly-sliced marinated pork skewered in a large stack on the rotisserie before being cooked and shaved". American gyros are typically made seasoned lamb and beef.
